释德如 The Master Speaks

Today’s Teaching:

Dear Shaolin Institute Members, Families and Friends:

(chang Xin, sincerity) is our foundation; 磨练意志 (Mo Lian Yi Zhi, to cultivate talent and will through hardships and tribulations) is our training; 培养克己自制的品质 (Pei Yang Ke Ji Zi Zhi De Pin Zhi, to cultivate the character of & self-discipline & self-control) is our Focus;

自信,自立,自强不息( (zi Xin, Zi Li, Zi Qiang Bu Xi, self-confidence, self-determination, constant never-ending empowerment) is our long term belief.

As our mission states, we are here to enlighten and empower everyone to find his/her self-nature and the greatness within. To do so we must cultivate ourselves to have healthy bodies and healthy minds with character, integrity, high level of discipline and indomitable Shaolin spirit.

Our show on December 4th was exactly created to express our mission and those ideas above. This dynamic showcase of Shaolin Kung Fu lights up the theater with great Shaolin spirit. Indeed the show gives you a genuine insight into Ancient Shaolin Way of Training and the daily lives of those who chose to study and live in Shaolin that brings greater mental and physical discipline and expresses the essence of our incredible mind-body control. The show draws you deeply into this wonderful story of cultural and personal enlightenment that gives way to the core messages in the story about ethics, integrity, character, self-discipline, self-control, compassion and respect for the world and the universe. Life represents the Qi of the universe. Let us be free to flow our Qi to find the best of ourselves in nature. Let’s lighten up the community with harmonious Qi to empower us all.

To do Kung Fu is to express Chan. To express Chan is not to think but to feel, feel the presence of the universe and act with the universe Qi, applying universe energy to strengthen yourself. We learn to let it go like nature flowing from one moment to another. In Kung Fu or Chan we find our-self-nature. We feel the rhythm of the universe to empower ourselves. We travel on the Chan path experiencing the moment of forgetting, detaching and emptying the mind. In Kung Fu, like Chan, we experience no attachment to the past, no lingering to the future but focus on present moment.

To reach the realm of wisdom with true happiness, we must see in our self-nature: (少林禪悟,智慧,無念,無意,無私,無我) Shaolin Chan enlightenment, wisdom, thoughtless, mindless, selfless, no I. In that status, our minds will be truly free…. We need the Chan wisdom not only in Kung Fu training but in life.

Shaolin spirit: self-cultivation, self-discipline, self-control, self-respect, self-enlightening, self-confidence, self-determination, constant, never-ending self-empowerment (少林精神,自修,自控,自尊,自悟,自信,自立,自強不息) we must uphold. In that we must stand firmly control ourselves and use the natural principles of Kung Fu and Chan to train our body and mind relentlessly and selflessly with indomitable spirit to dissolve any angers and emotional turmoil in life.

In Chan we must start with great ethics and high moral code: how to be a human-being in harmony and live in peace with the world. We must be in harmony with nature and with all peoples. Freedom comes with responsibility as we all say. Harmony needs detachment from the conceptual minds and emotions. It is challenging but not impossible for us to love for all—the wisdom of the East.

Review from last year’s Qi Retreat

Dr. E. Lee Saffold says:

The recent “Qi Retreat” in Pensacola, Florida conducted by Master Deru, the 31st generation descendent and a direct disciple of the late great Grand Master of the Shaolin temple, Suxi, was empowering as well as enlightening. Just to get away from regular daily work and focus entirely upon self-discovery and improvement was an experience that simply must be repeated by anyone interested in good physical, mental and spiritual health.

This retreat provided three primary benefits that I am convinced would be of great value to anyone seeking to live a quiet, peaceful, and productive life. (1) Learning the power of effective meditation. The value of silently turning your thoughts inward and detaching one’s self from any emotions, mental attachments or desires and simply “be” in the present tense with no past or future to regret or fear is a tremendous stress relief. (2) Understanding all of the various “energies” that are cultivated by a combination of physical movements of the body connected with controlled breathing and guided by the mind. These exercises, when done properly and regularly tend to improve one’s physical state while simultaneously developing the strength and capability of one’s mind. (3) Learning the ancient exercises of the Yi Jin Jing and Tai Gong along with some movements and martial applications of both Tai Chi Chuan and Shaolin Kung Fu from a master with a direct linage connection to the Shaolin Temple where they originated thousands of years ago and continue to be practiced today.

Through the expert teaching and guidance of Master Deru, it was abundantly clear that these ancient Chinese exercises of Shaolin Yi Jin Jing, Shaolin Tai Gong, and Tai Chi Chuan are effective to strengthen the entire human being, including body, mind and spirit. The exhilarating feeling of being completely relaxed, poised, confident as well as being physically and mentally refreshed after practicing these exercises for the greater part of three days was more than sufficient evidence to each participant that these exercises promise to be the very best means of maintaining a high degree of health for a lifetime. From Master Deru we learned how these exercises could help boost the immune system, improve oxygenation of the entire body, offer cardiovascular benefits, and improve blood circulation and respiratory function, relieve stress and increase one’s balance. I am convinced that all of these benefits will tend to prolong a quality life well into old age for persons who also maintain a healthy diet.

I highly recommend that everyone concerned with good health attend this Qi seminar with Master Deru at their earliest opportunity to learn these ancient methods of exercise with the intention to make them a daily practice. Harmony of mind and body with all that surrounds and affects us is the ultimate goal of those seeking peace and quality of life. This kind of knowledge is “like eating a peach”; the best way to understand the taste of a peach is to “eat one.” The best way to understand the benefits of these exercises tending toward a harmonious life is to do learn and practice them.

Sincerely,

E. Lee Saffold

December 4, 2011 Legacy Show

The LIU International Shaolin Institute presented a live-action Shaolin Kungfu Cultural Arts show at Archer High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia on December 4th, 2010, featuring Shaolin Masters performing Kungfu and cultural traditions.

The show, “A Special Shaolin Training Class,” depicted a special Kungfu training class day with special features in Chinese traditional leadership and character education. The show tells the story of how the students must meet unexpected intruders and deal with the conflict using extraordinary self-control, discipline, compassion, and integrity in Shaolin tradition. As a Shaolin student, one must learn to deal with challenges and vicissitudes at any moment in life with greater control of the mind and the body.

This special Shaolin training class show has indeed portrayed life learning journey of us, and it illustrated how Shaolin Kungfu students live and study the arts and the way of life with great mental and physical discipline, their incredible body and mind control changing not only their own lives but also many lives around them.

This inspirational performance appealed to almost all the audience, who in turn gave great encouragement for future shows. One family said, “This show belongs in Fox Theater instead of a High School.”

The moral of the show demonstrated not only the Chinese Kungfu discipline but also the values imparted by the Shaolin temple such as hard working ethics, self-control, character, and the compassion for each other and for the humanity as a whole. The show, without doubt, fascinated the crowd deep into this wonderful story of cultural and personal enlightenment.

Five “Cultural Ambassadors” from China were on the center stage along with over 50 Shaolin Institute Kungfu members from the Southeast of the US.

This cooperation between the Chinese and the American people in creating the show has shown the benefits of multicultural education and mutual understanding as well as desire to promote for the greater good.

“Life represents the Qi of the universe,” says Grand Master Shi Deru. “Let’s be free, flow our Qi with the nature, and find the best of ourselves in nature.” That is the theme of the show.

Another reviewer said, “The Legacy Show was unlike anything I’ve seen before. I walked away feeling as though I’d just witnessed something special. And it makes me want to be a part of that.”

December 4, 2011 Shaolin Institute Interschool Competition Information

The New Orleans school, under the direction of Chen Zhe, took first place in the team interschool competition. The students wowed judges and spectators by showing off skills with several weapons, different forms, applications, open hand fighting, and Tai Chi movements.

Mobile placed second after New Orleans. The group was smaller but no less graceful than New Orleans. Andy Ngo, under the direction of Li Qiang, led the students through a series of application drills.

Taking third place, under the direction of Zhang Jun, was the Atlanta school, who won the competition during September’s quarterly testing in Mobile.

December 4, 2011 Smoker Info

On the evening of December 4 after the Shaolin Legacy Show, the Shaolin Institute held a smoker for its students and invited fighters from other schools in the area.

The night started off with an exhibition match between Alec Demarco from the New Orleans school and Raymond Williams, Jr. from the Atlanta school. Both boys fought well and showed their Shaolin spirit and courage.

Thibodaux’s Anne Cooper won over Rhonda Balsamello, a student from a local Atlanta martial arts school.

Thibodaux’s Josh Joseph won against Atlanta’s Dexter Thomas.

Josh Joseph then went on to fight against Atlanta’s Logan Walker and won that match as well.

Thibodaux’s Lance Foussell won over Steve Dang, who came from another school to compete.

Lance suffered from a minor groin injury and asked Steve Dang to take the next match for him.

Steve went on to fight against Chen Zhe and was victorious.

Lin Cai won over Ricardo Lopez, who traveled from a local school to compete in the smoker.

Thibodaux’s Dustin Carbajal won against Philip Sehenuk, who is a student at a local Atlanta martial arts school. It was the second time the pair met, and the second time Dustin walked away victorious.

Li Qiang fought against Jason Saw, a local Atlanta fighter, and won the match.

Atlanta’s Johnny Nguyen won a match against Thibodaux’s Josh Blanchard.

All matches were refereed by Shifu. The judges were Andy Ngo, Leon Ngo, and Scott Keller. On hand to keep track of time and ring the match bells were Jeff Bordelon, Courtney Bordelon, and Pat Barry.

Pat Barry, a professional UFC fighter who trained with Shifu in New Orleans, was on hand to give the winners their medals at the end of the night. We’d like to again thank Archer High School for allowing us to host the events there this day.

SWAT Team News

The Liu Institute has revamped the way its demonstration teams are created and maintained. Here is a brief explanation of the different levels of SWAT members.

Line 1 is the only official SWAT Team thanks to the testing scores and years of contributions. They have the full uniform with patches and certificates.

Line 2 are those next to the first line and getting ready to be tested and re-evaluated as soon as that group is ready. The group at this status has only a certificate and a patch.

Line 3 are those who have been tested but are not qualified yet. They need some more work in performance in terms of both personal as well as group contribution in need of higher dedication and experience of more contribution to personal training and campus work contribution. They only have the first step of certification at this point.

News from your local schools:

New Orleans

On October 29, we had a Halloween party at the school for the kids… and some adults. The school was nicely decorated with lots of ghosts and goblins. The kids had fun participating in the horse stance contest, a dance contest with Chen Zhe as the judge, and pumpkin head basketball.

On December 11, the NOLA school held a seminar by Shifu Deru about Shaolin style Kung Fu and history. At 11:30AM, we learned about the history of the Shaolin Temple, which was followed by meditation and breathing exercises. Then at 2:15PM, the school held a family Kung Fu class at the Asian Pacific American Society Children’s Holidays party, followed by a demonstration at 3PM. This is an annual party put on for Asian children adopted by families in Louisiana. It’s an opportunity for the adopted children and their families to meet and play with other children like them and other Asians in the community.

Atlanta

In early October the Shaolin Institute (Atlanta) had the opportunity to put on a demonstration at the Rice Festival in Stone Mountain Park (GA). About 20 students along with 3 young masters, Chen Zhe, Li Qiang, and Zhang Jun, performed a 15 minute demo that showed not just skill in Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and San Shou but also skill in working as a team with great energy, high spirit and strong unity. Everyone involved worked very hard making our presentation among the beautiful mountain scenery a great experience and lots of fun, and we received a wonderful positive response from the audience. It was a privilege to present our school to the Stone Mountain area and all of the participants at the Rice Festival 2010. I can’t wait to see what will be presented in 2011.

Congratulations to all of the Shaolin Institute schools for making the December 4, 2010 Shaolin Legacy Show a success. We all worked long into the night to pull it together, and we did it. So thanks to each and every one of you involved (students, parents, and professionals alike). I learned a lot from all of the events (the testing, competition, Legacy Show, and San Shou Smoker) taking place on Saturday. I learned that teamwork, though not always easy, truly is a blessing to have and helps to make impossible tasks become possible. It was an empowering experience to be in the show alongside students and teachers from all of the Shaolin Institute schools, and I thank everyone who was able to travel the long distance to Atlanta to help make it happen.

Mobile

For the first couple of weeks of October, the Mobile school was busy preparing for the Greater Gulf State Fair. We had a magnificent booth set up from October 22 through October 31. We had two wonderful shows on October 23 and October 24. The shows consisted of a combination of Kung Fu, San Shou, and Tai Chi. The five China young Masters were at the fair, and they also participated in the shows at the fair, along with helping the booth workers by bringing people to the booth to sign up for VIPS. By the end of the state fair, there were a total of over 500 VIPS to register with the school. We held a weekend seminar for all the registered VIPS and a total of 42 VIPS arrived for the seminar.

We continued into November with the Renaissance Faire. On November 13 and 14, we had two demos each day. The first two demos on the first day consisted of entirely Kung Fu moves. Our very own Andy Ngo led the demos that day. On the second day of the Renaissance Faire, Alan Brown led both demos. These demos consisted of both Tai Chi and Kung Fu.

Continuing on through the middle of November, the Institute had another splendid booth set up for the Mobile International Festival. The Festival was a three day event starting on Thursday, November 17 and ending on Saturday, November 19. On all three days, there were demos held. All five masters participated in the multiple demos at the festival also. At the festival we had over 300 VIPS register with the school, and on Saturday, December 11, we are holding a second seminar in which 72 are scheduled to attend.

Due to three outstanding Parents (Debi Foster, Jenny Morton, and Ashley Parson) our sales at Mobile International Festival were the best ever. We also want to thank Andrew Kossik for the beautiful backdrop we have used at our recent shows and for his endless work at all our recent venues.

We are so grateful to have Li Qiang and Lin Cai at the Mobile and Daphne schools. Everyone enjoys their classes and high energy. Their English is showing rapid progress; too bad our Chinese is not.

Thibodaux

This past quarter has been slow going for Thibodaux, but we are optimistic that things will pick up again in the next quarter once the holidays have passed. We’ve enjoyed having both Chen Zhe and Li Pang at the school to help with training and with SWAT testing. Hopefully, we will see more of them during the next quarter.

Some Thibodaux students travelled to Mobile to participate in the demonstrations for the Greater Gulf State Fair by performing Tai Chi, San Shou, and traditional Kung Fu. After, we celebrated our hard work by treating the five young masters to a meal at Buffalo Wild Wings and by watching a UFC fight. They enjoyed it very much and marveled at the different fighting styles portrayed.

This quarter, students helped the local sheriff’s office by selling raffle tickets at a local festival. The money will help deputies and deputies’ families if they are hurt in the line of duty. For Halloween, some students dressed up in costumes and handed out candy to children in hopes of spreading cheer and possibly gaining public interest in our school. Later, we gathered at Jeff’s home to celebrate the holiday as a Shaolin family, allowing the kids to have fun and the adults to mingle.

On two separate occasions, San Shou students from the Thibodaux school accepted invitations from other local kickboxing schools to participate in fights.

Thibodaux fighters showed San Shou skill and knowledge each time they stepped into the ring. Participants in the exhibition-style matches of the first invitation were Anne Cooper, Courtney Bordelon, Josh Blanchard, and Josh Joseph. In the second invitation, the matches were judged, and all the Thibodaux students who took part came away victorious. Congratulations to Anne Cooper, Courtney Bordelon, and Josh Joseph. We look forward to any upcoming invitations, which include fights for Courtney Bordelon, Dustin Carbajal, and Lance Foussell.

New Students this past quarter were:

Thibodaux looks forward to hosting the quarterly testing in March. Hope to see you there!

LIU Student Turned UFC Champion:

Pat Barry

Shaolin Sanda kickboxing in UFC

On Jan 22, 2011, Patrick Barry, Shaolin Institute senior student and chief assistant San Shou instructor studying under Shifu Shawn Liu (Shi Deru), demonstrated to the world the capabilities of San Shou by defeating the street fighter Joey Beltran at the “UFC Fight Night 23:UFC Fight for the Troops 2” in Fort Hood, TX. Patrick Barry overwhelmingly defeated his opponent in the third round. He truly represented Shaolin-style San Shou techniques to an audience of fighters and mixed martial arts lovers around the US. San Shou technique involves fierce attack, solid defense, comprehensive and combinations of punches and kicks. These are the high level techniques that Patrick Barry brought to the fight.

Though lighter and shorter (5’10) than his opponent (6’11), Patrick Barry won the fight by calmly working Beltran step by step with strategized Shaolin upper and lower punches and kicks.

In round one, Patrick Barry did not initiate the attacks; rather, he took a lot of punches to gauge and tire out his opponent. He quietly and calmly caught his opponent’s punches and used a variety of defensive and counter attack moves.

Going into Round two, Patrick initiated some attacks and showcased his SanShou kicks to his opponent’s upper and lower body, as well as using punch combinations. His opponent snuck in some high tech street fighting techniques by stomping on Patrick Barry’s feet repeatedly, which would result in a point deduction in San Shou competitions.

Patrick responded to the underhandedness in the third round with repeated high velocity whipped-leg kicks (Shaolin iron legs) to the lower body, bringing Beltran to his knees. The referee called Patrick Barry as the winner before the end of the third round.

Throughout the fight, Patrick Barry maintained good techniques and impeccable forms with high speed kicks and punches. He represented San Shou at the highest level with solid defenses and fierce attacks while staying calm and composed to fully strategize against his opponent. We would like also to congratulate our former student Melvin Paul Guillard who also won the UFC on the same night.
