释德如 The Master Speaks
Today’s Teaching:
Dear Shaolin Institute Members, Families & Friends:
Let’s say a few words in Chinese:
少林精神,自修,自控,自尊,自悟
Shaolin Jingshen, Zi Xiu, Zi Kong,
Zi Zun, Zi Wu
Shaolin spirit is to cultivate ourselves daily without being informed, control ourselves daily without being alerted, respect ourselves without being obliged, enlighten and educate ourselves daily without being taught. We are the leaders in our community for healthy bodies and healthy minds so as to reach the harmonious humanity in our society.
Vision based leadership
From a training perspective we see ourselves training either internal or external Kung-Fu. Our Shaolin training crafts our patience, our ability of self-cultivation and self-control and self-discipline. Kung-Fu training produces leaders who take the initiative and lead the community towards a better lifestyle for health and well-being. It also produces harmonious Qi, a wonderful energy that flows throughout our body creating homeostasis..
Kung-Fu trains our bodies and minds to produce positive Qi and inner strength which in turn brings calmness and inner peace into being. This ultimately brings about a balance between the body and the mind. Either as Chan (Zen) or Kung-Fu teachers, SWAT/leadership team members or future GBSC members, most come to the institute with one goal. This goal is to learn and improve our lives in safety, Qi balance, inner peace, self-healing, and/or character and personal growth. Some of us even optimistically wish to have a Quantum leap forward in order to quickly grasp the arts.
We all want to become superb men or women at one point, those are all good wishes, but we must accept whatever it is the nature provides us. If we want that quantum leap, which we can, we must first of all have the right vision that will allow us to have the right action. We must be realistic about what we can or cannot accomplish within a short time.
Kung-Fu, as we know, means hard work, which in itself is a very long journey. Patience in Chinese means virtue. We must be patient and train hard and assure our mindset is in the right direction and on the right path; right timing will bring the right strive. It takes time to learn, time to shape ourselves as well to be prepared for the right path. It is the process we enjoy instead of focusing on that result. Chan or Kung-Fu is a way of life we choose to enjoy. Kung-Fu produces happy Qi in us.
Kung-Fu Leadership
We all wish to do well in our lives and to be peaceful, to be harmonious and happy. It is very challenging, especially in this society today. We have so many obstacles, vicissitudes to conquer and to tackle.
Good life needs a good community to support. No individual can live happily on his/her own. We must build a community that can support that harmonious Qi, the peaceful Qi and happy Qi. That Qi must reach out and proliferate in all directions of the world so that more people will enjoy a harmonious and peaceful life that is full of positive Qi flowing with the universe. As good Kung-Fu leadership members, we need to be good listeners to explore and to question and only then we can appreciate others’ point of view and efforts. When we present our view and vision, we are poised to present with authenticity.
Only when we appreciate and care for others for their sake and for their well-being with our hearts, we are trusted and honored to lead without encumbrance. To be good leaders so that we may lead our community, we must do the following:
Listening:
In any leadership, especially in Kung-Fu and Chan teachings at the Shaolin Institute, listening is the soul of effective communication. Genuine listening requires the ability to engage your senses and mind. By using your six sense of mindfulness we apply our compassion from our hearts, we open to unlimited potentials.
Explore:
We set space for two way communication. We explore by asking questions to reinforce our vision, getting rid of our concerns and getting into the root of issues. Listening and exploring with full attention and focus we appreciate the other person’s view no matter we agree or not.
As good leaders, we must establish efficient communication so that we will have all the people together. In that way we are carrying all Sentient Beings who come in contact with us across the Shore of health and Chan.
As good Kung-Fu or Chan leaders, we must have our Livelihood together in order first to help others with compassion. In assisting others and teaching large amount of people we must have passion to the arts of Kung-Fu and art of Chan. We must have compassion to all peoples.
To do so we must appreciate the beauty of the minds to enlighten and educate ourselves before we educate and doctorate our community and our society at large no matter whom they are.
Today’s society needs a lot of healing in order to get back to a healthy status. To do so we must approach them not on our terms but stand on the other side of the isle. We must develop our ability to entertain Paradigm shift to be able to shift views.
It is important to stand in various angles and space to see and observe so that we will not be conceptual or stick with our own view.
As good leaders we must develop the aptitude in synergy to echo the Universal Qi, to produce and multiply more harmonious Qi around us all, for the betterment of our community and for the betterment of the society.
Before we accomplish any of those lofty causes, we must first of all cultivate and develop our own discipline. Without discipline and focus we can accomplish nothing. We need that discipline and self-control along with the calmness and inner peace to communicate our feelings, our thoughts, our Qi and our world.
We need that high level of self discipline to produce high levels of inner freedom and inner peace which will help us to flow with the Qi of the universe. To better the community and carry more people across the shore of healthy bodies, minds and spirits, we must acquire a team of leaders to multiply many more so that we may reach out to the whole world.
To be continued on next issue…

Shaolin Institute Brings Home Six International Gold Medals
Students from the LIU International Shaolin Institute are accustomed to performing in front of as many as 20 thousand spectators. However, they’re accustom to mesmerizing and captivating the eyes of audiences of national and international events; such as theGreetings of Olympic Games Cup held in Hong Kong in the winter of 2008; International Chinese Martial Arts Championships in Orlando, Educational Funding Company’s International All Martial Arts Teachers & Maters Conference in Washington D.C., and not to mention the most recent display of their martial skills in Dallas Texas at the 13th Annual 2011 LEGENDS of KUNG-FU WORLD MARTIAL ARTS CHAMPIONSHIP; these young Master’s pitted their skills against champions from all over the world such as Hong Kong, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Taiwan and their own home land of China. These champions allowed nothing to stop them and performed

In the early morning of July 28th when everyone in the surrounding area were restfully sleeping, Grand Master Shi De Ru (aka: Master Shawn Liu) and a team of 7 seniors and supporters all hailing from the Shaolin Institute on the gulf coast headed out on their journey, with Dallas, Texas as their destination; this long trip meant everything to these young Champions as they were setting the pace to participate in one of the most intriguing international tournaments held in the US. As a result of competing in the 13th Annual 2011 LEGENDS of KUNG-FU World Martial Arts Championship.
These Young Masters walked away with 6 gold medals and 1 silver; these winnings came by way of competing in Traditional Fighting Forms, Weapons, Tai Chi and San Shou Kickboxing.

Atlanta
The LIU International Shi Deru Shaolin Institute Atlanta School has recently held a public demonstration at the Discover Mills mall during the release of Kungfu Panda 2. Crowds of community members watched as Grandmaster Shi Deru and his students performed traditional Shaolin kungfu.
Interested visitors also had the chance to speak with the master and his students between forms to learn more about the philosophy of the institute. They were also able to partake in a raffle to win VIP scholarships for classes for up to three months.
Children in the audiences also greatly enjoyed playing with the Magnificent Five (the most famous animals represented in traditional kungfu: dragon, monkey, tiger, mantis, and crane). We had straight three days promotion of Shaolin Kungfu spirit and the spirit of Kungfu Magnificent Fives. The community and the business enjoyed us tremendously, especially the AMC theater folks who expressed great interests in our demonstrations. The crowd, who came to see movies, got to see the authentic live Kungfu performance.
Some of the members of the audience have since joined our school and have been enjoying the curriculum greatly. Those individuals are Anisha Dyce, Evan Dang, Byron Fisher, and Gabe Butler. We are very excited to have all of them training alongside us now!
The LIU International Shi Deru Shaolin Institute, Atlanta School, partook in two demonstrations in July; one was at the “Enter the Dragon” dragon boat festival at the Gwinnett Braves Stadium, and the other was at the 2011 Asian Cultural Experience at the Gwinnett Center. Students from the school participated in showing off their kung fu skills to the large crowds of cheering spectators of about 15000.
At the Gwinnett Braves demonstration the attendees were also able to interact with the students and several of the Magnificent Five (the traditional most famous animals that are represented in Shaolin Kung Fu: dragon, monkey, tiger, mantis, and crane). The children were especially fond of the Magnificent Five, as they had a wonderful time hugging and taking pictures with the animal characters. One photographer in the audience also took pictures of the students as they performed many difficult feats outside of the stadium. Even in the hot Georgia summer weather, the participants in the demonstration performed to the best of their abilities.
At the ACE demonstration, students performed in the opening parade and on stage, then continued for the rest of their time at the event practicing and holding classes by the Shaolin Institute booth. Interested audience members were able to ask questions of Grandmaster Shi Deru about the institute and martial arts. The crowd loved the many forms that the Grandmaster and his students.
On August 20th, the institute will be hosting the US Open Martial Arts tournament in Mobile, Alabama. Competitors from the area as well as from all around the US and even a few international fighters will compete to see who the best of the best is. The tournament is open to fighters in all disciplines of martial arts. The Sanda Kickboxing champion of China, Li Jie, will also be competing in the event.

A few Good s we need to listen:
“First let me say that the students care deeply for their school and what they learn and experience here. They acknowledge the positive impact it has on their lives and the tremendous value to their physical and mental well-being. They would not be here day after day if this were not true.”
The first thing I tried was simply cleaning everywhere I could, as thoroughly as possible. I was amazed at the result. The positive response was immediate. As students walked in nearly everyone remarked on the nice smell or how clean everything looked. The energy was raised quickly and easily simply by cleaning. So, my first suggestion is to CLEAN. Get the dust off, get the smell clean. Get the floors shining. If you can, change the position of some of the furniture. Put flowers out or a new plant. These easy changes made a difference at once. Then keep it clean. Keep energy up, being clean helps.
I understand that there used to be a routine cleaning procedure; after certain classes everyone would clean bathrooms, training room, etc. This practice has stopped and needs to begin again. It should be a simple thing to do; we will announce in class that we will stop 15 minutes early to clean and then give everyone a task, if this is permissible with you.
Also, I’ve been told that all classes used to read the “Word of the Week”. The word and definition were read at the beginning or end of each class. I think we should be doing this. These words carry great wisdom and can be applied to our daily lives.
These are simply some thoughts. I truly believe we have a wonderful school here. Everyone wants it to prosper. The more positive energy we put forward the better it will be.
Let us strive to eliminate the negative. There is no excuse for it. Instead, let us strive to be what we teach: HARMONY, INNER PEACE, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL TRANQUILITY AND HEALTH.
“We have organized our message board on the teaching floor to keep students involved with teachings, seminars and events.
The instructors are organizing lesson plans through a template sent to Renard, and George is working on our lesson plans to develop for class. The overall school spirit has been great, we’ve had fun games for kid’s classes, the school has had an overall positive mental attitude from all our students. Very good energy
We’ve organized a cleaning team to keep lobby, training floor and bathrooms clean.
We’ve been keeping all equipment, Sanshou, weapons and inventory in order.
We have organized old posters, photos and flyers ,reframed and hung them throughout the campus to motivate and excite our students and create a professional atmosphere.
We have been keeping class fresh by introducing short fun exercises between topics.
We have been monitoring kids classes-making sure the advanced kids are learning more and not getting bored.
We are keeping in touch with the Thibidoux campus a lot more.

New Orleans
This past quarter has been productive at the New Orleans location. The Fitness Buddy Program has proven effective in getting students motivated. To kick off the event, Shifu came to New Orleans to give a nutrition lecture and advice on eating healthy. He talked about hot foods and cold foods and how both affect the body. Also expressed was the need for us to be aware of food’s effect on our ability to maintain balance. There are a total of 15 fitness students; seven of which are new to the school. A few have even expressed interest in staying on after the contest closes.
The office in New Orleans is shaping up thanks to the new office assistant, Vince Quatroy. He lives nearby in the city and first saw Shifu several years ago as he walked Pat Barry out to the ring at the King’s Tournament. It always stayed in the back of his mind that this was a man he’d like to meet and possibly learn from. Recently while browsing the internet, he stumbled onto the LIU International Shi De Ru Shaolin Institute website. He immediately sought out the New Orleans location, wanting to become a student and hoping to help in any way he could. Vince and his wife have just welcomed a son into their family. He looks forward to getting to know his family here at the school as well and intends to take full advantage of learning the Shaolin Arts while helping out.
Welcome, Vince!
Students from the New Orleans school travelled down to Houma with Shifu on April 9 to help the Thibodaux students perform in two demonstrations for CASA, an organization that helps abused children. The crowd was mesmerized as several forms, applications, and weapons were presented as Shifu narrated.
Spreading the word that training is available to those who can use it to defend themselves and others against threats is always important.
The very next weekend, April 16, the Asian Pacific American Society hosted the Asian Festival at the Audubon Zoo. Students from both Thibodaux and New Orleans performed for the crowds.
The school was exposed to over 9000 visitors that day. Several prospective students filled out VIP cards in hopes of learning more information about the school and what it offers.
A Tai Chi sword form was demonstrated by John Lutz, showing smooth, slow movements. In contrast to that, the crowd saw the sharp, quick-paced moves from traditional kung-fu weapons and forms as shown here by Li Qiang
and George Lunsford.
Students from New Orleans went to the Clearview Mall on Saturday, May 28 to perform in a demonstration for the opening weekend of Kung Fu Panda 2. The demonstration sparked interest in the school, and three new introductions were set up for the very next week.

In order to ease stress levels in the community due to the possible flooding, Shifu hosted a free meditation seminar—Stress Release & Social Harmony—on the evening of June 25.
Participants learned to mediate, practiced breathing techniques, and learned Tai Gong.
Shifu also held training for students to help us prepare for next quarter, which will stress the staff as our weapon concentration. Here are some pictures from that day.

This next quarter should prove to be an exciting one. Coach Jie Li, an International San Shou fighting champion and fighting coach in San Shou Kickboxing, MMA and Muay Thai from the Beijing Sports University, arrived in New Orleans. He will receive his fellowship program of studies at LIU International Shi De Ru Shaolin Institute. For the next few months, he will participate in Shaolin Kung Fu instructors and Masters training program. He instructed several classes to both Kung Fu and Sanshou students before travelling to Atlanta and impressed students with his talent.

Mobile
Spring and early summer have been a busy time for all of us here at
Liu Institute, Mobile. Whew! Let me take a breath to catch everyone up on
the news from southern Alabama.
We had several rehearsals and then two Kung Fu demos on May 28th and
29th at local theaters. Movie goers were extremely impressed with folks
flying through the air and doing all sorts of things one doesn’t normally see
a body do! We picked up 88 slips of interest and are still calling at
this writing. From these 88, so far, we have enrolled over a dozen two
week VIPs. Most are enthusiastic in their new classes, and I expect they’ll
becoming new members shortly.
We hadn’t caught our breath before quarterly testing was on. I never knew the meaning of counting until this experience! It was inspiring to see all the students together at their best. In all we promoted over 40 students.
Congratulations, all!

Chin na (Qinna) & the development of jujitsu
Japanese and Chinese documents state that Chen Yuan-Yun (Chin Gempin or Chen Yuan-Pin; 1587-1674) was the first to introduce Chinese ju techniques (柔道 rou dao) into Japan during
the early to middle 1600’s. One such Japanese document is “Collections of Ancestor’s Conversations Volume 2″.
“Honcho Bugei Shoden” (also referred to as “Kanjo Shoden”) written by Hinatsu Shigetaka in 1716 states the following:
Recently, Chin Gempin came to Japan and stayed at the Kokusa monastery, where he met three ronin: Fukuno Hichiroemon, Isogai Jirozaemon, and Miura Yojiemon. Chin Gempin told them that in China, there is an art of seizing a man. He said that he had seen it practiced and gave a brief example of the art. Chin Gempin also stated that he had not learned all of the principles of the art. Upon hearing this, the samurai further researched this art. Once achieving a degree of skill, the samurai founded the Kito-ryu school of Jujutsu. This story is repeated in various Japanese documents including Honcho Seji Danki, Bujutsu Ryusoroku, Roi Shintoryo Hisho, Kitoryu Kempohi, Kitoryu Toka Mondo, Owan Meisho Zue, and Zoin Kinsei Kijindenas. Rickson Gracie also attributes the Chinese with bringing the techniques of Ju-Jitsu into Japan, as stated on his website, when explaining the origin of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Qinna rou dao can also be found in shuai jiao. Judo’s development was influenced by Kito-ryu. Similarities between judo and shuai jiao are apparent through the common link with chin na rou dao. The process of both of these arts becoming a sport further influenced similarities within their softer techniques.
Thibodaux
Thibodaux has seen a constant struggle this past quarter, as it has lost several students—mostly due to summer vacations, new jobs, or time issues. Morale has started to rebound with the students trying to band together to create fundraisers that will help the school continue to thrive. We hope that in the coming months, things will once again pick up.
In order to keep our family close and to introduce play along with work, instructors held a Sleep Over for the kung-fu students. Everyone danced along to video games and played games to enjoy the night.
The Survival Against Fatal Encounters program is still held on the third Thursday of each month. There aren’t as many attending the classes, but as long as we can reach some people in the community, we will continue to host this free evening of self-defense.
On April 6, Thibodaux students, along with Shifu and Shaolin brothers from New Orleans, held two demonstrations in Houma for CASA of Terrebonne (an organization which helps abused children). The crowd enjoyed the demonstration and held on to Shifu’s every word as he explained what the students were doing.
The next weekend, April 16, saw some Thibodaux students travelling to the Audubon Zoo to help out the New Orleans location with the big demonstration there. It was a wonderful experience, as it is every year, and we look forward to returning again.

Regiment Asian Cultural Experience
By Rose Shields – Atlanta Campus Student
It appears that everyone who attended the 2010 Asian Cultural Experience at the Gwinnett Civic Center had a blast seeing, hearing, and experiencing so many different beautiful art contributions from around the world. For all of us at the Shaolin Institute, it was a real treasure to pull together and present an exciting demonstration of Shaolin martial arts to other participants and guests at the event.
Not only did the students at the Shaolin Institute in Atlanta get to perform, but we also got to see and speak with so many interesting groups: musicians, dancers, other martial artists, painters, and much more. It was so enriching to learn new things about the abundant cultures in China, Korea, Japan, and others. as well as share a little about our own
Shaolin legacy and its introduction into the United States through to our very own Shi Deru. There were 2 days of show and tell for everyone, and all was received with welcoming applause and smiles from people all over Atlanta (and the Asian continent)!
I am very happy to have gotten to work with and know better the students (and teachers) in SWAT team this year: Emily Song, Joyce Yun, Jerry Lu, Andrew Le, Levi Mang, Mohammed Mansor, Lee Saffold, and Raymond Williams. They all helped me put together an exciting 4 minute choreographed presentation of Kung Fu and Tai Chi that turned out so well thanks to their teamwork, patience, good humor, and devotion. I enjoyed every moment of its making because they all helped stretch themselves and myself to make the performance a success.
The piece itself was collaboration with Sylvia Sham’s singers Ray Ng and Andy Wong, who sang the famous “Nan Er Dang Zi Qiang,” while our SWAT Team swept the stage in that smooth yet fierce Shaolin style.
All of the teachers, students, and parents at the Shaolin Institute did such a fantastic job manning the tables, recruiting new possible students, performing, AND keeping high spirits. Thanks to you all for making my first ACE experience an awesome one. I know that the other participants at this year’s ACE look forward to seeing us again next year, so let’s continue to grow and support each other in this great Shaolin way!

A note about our friend and mentor Susan Chan. She took a short needed and well-deserved break from the constant demands of the school. She came back with a full force and tons of energy.
We added a new employee to the rolls here in early May. That would be me, Becky Pardue. I am still learning the ropes, fumbling and bumbling a bit, but hanging’ in there. I appreciate everyone’s support and help.
Last but not least, we just put forth a monumental effort and got all our mats steam cleaned. Wow! It smells good in here! Thank you everyone who helped and a special thanks to Chris Morton who provided the steamer!
Have a great summer everyone. Use that sunscreen and don’t
forget….BREATHE!
