  • Shaolin Institute senior student and Chief Assistant Sanshou Instructor Heavyweights Patrick Barry (5-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) will take a challenge to fight Joey Beltran (12-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at the UFC’s second “Fight for the US Troops” event.
  • This is the 2nd time Patrick Barry will fight for UFC main card.
  • Barry talked about the UFC matchup with his institute and his Shifu Shawn Liu –Shi Deru (www.shaolin-world.net), describing his opponent as one that walks forward like the fictional characters from the classic horror films.
    “He’s a living zombie,” Barry said. “Everything you throw is going to land on him, but he’s going to constantly walk forward and, eventually, you’re going to get too tired of hitting him in the face. And then, he’s going to catch you.” Along with him, his old Sanshou team mate from New Orleans, UFC light weight veteran fighter Melvin Guillard will fight the UFC new star Evan Dunham. “UFC Fight Night 23:UFC Fight for the Troops 2” is expected to be held Jan. 22 in conjunction with Fort Hood in Texas, which will air on Spike TV.

Due to “security concerns” that come with working with the military, it took a long time to get this fighting event finalized.

This is Patrick Barry’s first fight since he broke is hand fighting his childhood hero, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, at UFC 115. Although he dropped Filipovic early in the fight, he unexpectedly broke his hand again in the process and later injured his foot on a kick. That set in motion a late-fight surge from Filipovic, a former PRIDE champion. As he explained:  “ I would never give up any fight in the mid of the fighting despite the severely broken hand and foot.  I will always give my audience the best and ultimate fight.”  I will fight all over the world.  I will fight again in China to represent Shaolin Sanshou when UFC breaks the first fight China.

Patrick Barry made his first Sanshou pro debut on November 2, 2002 at his coach’s U.S. Open International Martial Arts championships, winning the national title in Sanshou US title over Robert Parham in Biloxi, MS. Then he pursued Sanshou kickboxing full time  with Master Shawn Liu at LIU International Shaolin Institute in New Orleans. A year later Barry participated at Kung-fu World Championships in China, winning a silver medal.

In June 2003, Barry fought twice in the USASKF Art of War II Sanshou Professional Fights in Atlanta, GA. He won both a US National Sanshou Team Spot and a World Title by knocking out Paul Gurevidius. In November 2003, as a US National Team member Barry participated at the Wushu Kung-fu World Championships in Macau, China, winning a silver medal. In December 2004, he won the K. Superstar Title in New Orleans. From 2002 through 2008, he visited China four times with his Coach Shawn Liu and competed in one of Shandong‘s stadiums and trained with Chinese national Sanshou Team at the Shaolin Temple.

He also participated in “Journey to the East” documentary filmed in China and was named by the Shaolin Temple Masters as the True Shaolin Warrior of the west.

这场比赛将在Spike电视现场转播。 本次比赛由于关系到美军部队的安全问题，一直到现在才定下来。这是Patrick Barry从他上次在UFC115 与他幼年时的英雄Mirko “Cro Cop”（日本PRIDE 世界冠军）作战中，把手和脚折断后的第一次出战。尽管在那场比赛初赛阶段他把他的幼时英雄两次打到在地，但是后来他由于脚和手部在作战中断裂，结果败北于他的少年英雄。在那场恶战中尽管Patrick Barry的手和脚都断裂，但是他没有在作战中放弃一刻，就像他说的一样，“我会永远对我的观众做最好的作战表演，终极的决战。”Patrick Barry说：我将会打到全世界，当UFC到中国的那天，我将会代表少林散打在中国与各国斗士作战。

Patrick Barry是康雷（Cung Le）之后刘向阳培养的一号重量级选手，他在2002年美国“国际擂台公开赛”和“孙子兵法”散打大赛中取得了全美冠军。那是他跟随刘向阳大师专业训练后的第一场职业比赛。在少林学院的新奥尔良的分院全日投入专业训练一年以后他得到了世界散打锦标赛的第二名，2003年6月份他又获得美国冠军后， 进入美国国家队。他以美国队的身份参加了“孙子兵法”世界职业大赛，将欧洲散打冠军和世界自由搏击赛国际冠军，Paul Gurevidius击倒在地。并且在以后的数年中，打了好几年的k1，还打了散打和自由搏击，以及泰拳比赛，多次获胜。从2002年至2008年他多次到中国训练，曾经多次在少林寺德扬大师学校训练，并在中国各地参加了散打友谊赛，战况良佳。
